Welcome to the 2020 Streaming Media Europe 101, our annual spotlight on the most interesting, important, and influential companies in the online video space. This is our ninth list, but it marks a first: the first time we are not including any companies whose headquarters are not based in the UK or continental Europe. In past years, we’ve included companies based in the US that had substantial operations or market penetration in Europe, but this year wanted to keep things as “local” as possible.
We put “local” in quotes, because of course these companies’ operations and customers aren’t limited to Europe. Some of the companies here have quite small markets, geographically, but most are targeting markets outside their home countries or regions. And in a year when international travel ground to a halt, it’s been impressive to watch how many of them have continued to expand their markets despite the obstacles.
We’ve also stayed away entirely from content companies and platforms; instead, we’re emphasising the companies that create the technologies that enable those content publishers to reach their customers.
So how do we pick the Streaming Media Europe 101? We start with a master list of all the companies we’re aware of in our space, then ask our editorial and publishing team to rank them on a scale of 0 (doesn’t belong on the final list at all) to 5 (no list of important companies would be complete without it). The top 101 make the list. Interestingly, not a single company averaged a perfect 5. (Also, please note that the one voter who is associated with one of the companies on the list didn’t actually get to vote for his own company.)
