The 2019 Streaming Media Europe 101
This year’s Streaming Media Europe 101 is our eighth annual look at the most interesting, important, and influential companies in the online video space, and it's more Euro-centric than ever, though there are a few U.S.-based companies whose presence in Europe is undeniable.
Of course, those European companies’ operations and customers aren’t limited to Europe. One of the most impressive things about putting together this list every year is seeing how many European-based companies are having an impact outside of the continent, whether that’s by way of customers or by establishing an outpost elsewhere, typically in the U.S. This year’s list also shows how dynamic the streaming industry in Europe is—more than two dozen of these companies weren’t on last year’s list.
Once again this year, we stayed away from honouring content providers for the most part; instead we’re emphasising the companies that create the technologies that enable those content publishers to reach their customers. In some cases, those companies are also content publishers or providers, but that’s not why they’re being recognized here.
So how do we pick the Streaming Media Europe 101? We start with a master list of all the companies we’re aware of in our space, then ask our editorial and publishing team to rank them on a scale of 0 (doesn’t belong on the final list at all) to 5 (no list of important companies would be complete without it). The top 101 make the list. Interestingly, not a single company averaged a perfect 5. (Also, please note that the one voter who is associated with one of the companies on the list didn't actually get to vote for his own company.)
