Mobii Systems announces Microblock technology to stream CMAF in Dash/HLS with a true Light to Glass (End-to-End) global latency of less than 500ms.

Microblock technology overcomes the challenges of speed, synchronization and scalability present in today's streaming technology, enabling real-time End-to-End latency with existing streaming formats such as CMAF in Dash/HLS.

Toronto, ON(19 Oct 2022)

Mobii Systems, a video streaming tech start-up headquartered in Toronto, today announces Microblock Technology, that enables video streaming in Dash/HLS, to achieve an End-to-End global latency of less than 500ms.

“Put quite simply, our technology enables CMAF (Dash/HLS) streams to achieve an End-to-End latency faster than WebRTC,” said Roderick Barrett, COO of Mobii.

“While industry has been turning to WebRTC for the answer to latency, there are significant shortfalls in performance and high associated costs to achieve this at scale. With Microblock technology, we enable real-time End-to-End latency with existing streaming formats such as CMAF in Dash/HLS. Streams are compatible with existing CDN’s and video players, which is a significant factor in streaming at scale,” said Roderick Barrett, COO of Mobii.

“We looked at the entire pipeline, not just focusing on one specific element. When you start to unlock performance gains early on, these quickly become exponential across the entire End-to-End pipeline.”

Key to the technology is the development of Microblock enabled encoders (for cloud and on-premises use). This new encoding architecture reduces encoding latency significantly and connects output streams to global cloud edge-clusters using a Microblock Protocol via HTTP2. Once streams are delivered to the global edge, they are egressed as CMAF (Dash/HLS) to major CDN’s for playback into existing video players, supporting fast start-up with a TTFF of less than 100ms.

“Microblock Technology can be implemented into almost any existing workflow, it speeds up the entire encoding and distribution pipeline, while still using traditional CDN as a last mile solution. Streaming output to the player control is standard CMAF in Dash/HLS, so you can achieve real-time latency at scale, without the high cost associated with WebRTC.”

Some of the further benefits of Microblock Technology include:

  • Frame synchronization of video, audio and data streams
  • Rapid start-up times with a TTFF <100ms
  • Near zero global audience drift

“With our technology, you can stream multiple camera angles of a sports game and let users seamlessly change their viewing experience at will, all with real-time End-to-End latency that lets viewers direct their own experience,” said Roderick Barrett. “Solving latency and frame synchronization, opens up many opportunities for organizations to deploy innovative real-time solutions in live streaming”.

Having completed several POC’s during 2022, Mobii has now entered the commercial stage, with several systems having been deployed into sport environments.
