Streaming Media Europe Preview
This year’s Streaming Media Europe conference promises to be bigger and better than ever before. I say that every year, but it’s truer than ever this year.
Bigger, because we’ve added another satellite event, Connected Home 2011. This conference looks at how the information technology, broadcasting, and telecommunications industries are coming together to deliver video any time, anywhere, whether on an iPad in the den, a PC in the office, or a flat-screen TV in the living room. Dr. William Cooper of informitv is chairing that event, and he offers a more detailed preview later in these pages.
We’re also repeating two successful events we debuted last year—Online Video Strategies, the only online video event aimed at the fast-growing number of non-video experts who need to bolster their online video efforts, and the Content Delivery Summit, once again chaired by Dom Robinson, former CEO of Global-MIX, current consultant, and longtime contributor to StreamingMediaGlobal.com. His preview also follows.
As for it being better than ever, you only need to look at our two keynote speakers to see that: Virgin Media’s director of consumer platforms and devices, Ian Mecklenburgh, will kick off the first day of Streaming Media Europe proper (18 October) with a candid discussion of the challenges and opportunities presented by “Streaming to the Connected Home,” tying in nicely with that day’s Connected Home programme.
Then, on Day 2, we’ve got a representative from the undisputed leader in online video: YouTube. Oliver Heckmann, engineering director for YouTube Europe, will offer a “peek inside” YouTube, looking particularly at the company’s evolution from startup to the third largest website in the world as well as offering insight into YouTube engineering and how it solves problems such as copyright protection.

And then, of course, there are the 20 sessions that make up the core of the Streaming Media Europe conference. From how-to sessions on encoding for iDevices and adaptive streaming to debates over transcoding in-house versus in the cloud, from discussions on video in education, government, and the enterprise to panels exploring the impact of social media, and from a case study about HTML5 adoption to a panel of the leading over-the-top broadcasters in Northern Europe, the programme is comprehensive and compelling.
Finally, all Streaming Media Europe events will be in new locations this year. The preconference workshops on Flash Video, the Microsoft Media Platform, video advertising, and encoding for Flash, mobile, and HTML5 will take place at the Hilton London Olympia, as will the Content Delivery Summit. All of those events are on Monday, 17 October.
The rest of Streaming Media Europe—including the Expo, which draws more than
1,000 attendees—has moved to the Olympia Conference Centre, walking distance from the Hilton London Olympia in central London.
