Review: Jet Stream VDO-X

“Branding niche CDN offerings allows our customers to avoid the need to maintain a monolithic CDN,” said van der Ziel. “We can even replicate accounts between CDNs.”

CDN Status and Statistics
VDO-X’s CDN Status shows an overview of the VDO-X license, including licence expiration, maximum number of streaming servers, user accounts, total assets, and assets per user. Simultaneous users can also be throttled back.

One of the most useful statistics, though, has nothing to do with content delivery or bandwidth. While many CDNs provide statistics to their end users, some have a limited set of statistics that allow the CDN to easily monitor its own growth needs. Besides the number crunching and frequently updated graphs, VDO-X also has a clever top 10 GeoISP list that shows the number of requests that derived from networks that do not currently have one of Jet Stream’s CDN clients’ servers on it.

This particular tool is helpful in looking at streaming delivery. Since all CDNs, including VDO-X, are designed to handle progressive downloads—some with edge caching and others with larger PoP caching—there is a tendency to ignore the need for positioning streaming servers at high-request points.
