Magnus Svensson: Where are you standing when it comes to CDN? Are you using a multi-CDN solution?
Vinay Gupta: From our point of view, I think it's important to understand there are two big things that I could talk about in this space. One thing is, how do we do CDN selection? That's a layer that we have to deal with. A lot of that is dictated by our obligations, et cetera, with studios that are forwarding us their content, which is making us think a lot about that kind of CDN partner that we are working with, where do they stand in terms of their policies or their geo-protection techniques and a lot of those things. So that's one trend.
The other thing clearly is, is around multi-CDN. More and more, we are realising that putting all our eggs in one basket is not the wisest thing in some ways. At the moment, we're using two CDNs and we actively want to work more and more in that space and just choose the CDN which fits for the purpose. We'll have given a given user at a given point in time. There's a lot of thinking around how automation could achieve the CDN switching at runtime, again, where we are actively working in our player code base, but also all the time encouraging our vendors as well, that you should be thinking about these things, how analytics and player decisioning could be smarter about what CDNs they're choosing to serve the content back to the client.
So there's a lot of interesting stuff happening in that area. Connected to that is a little bit of thinking around scale as well. During the COVID time, we saw unprecedented load on our services. And I guess a lot of people who are heading to this talk, and you might echo that sentiment too. And that has just given us a little bit of a glimpse at what IPN might look like in future, which is another challenge: how we keep our offloading to our origins optimal all the time, and which CDNs are actively working in that space, and innovating in that space. They become a natural choice.
Magnus Svensson: I know it's a complex area, especially when you're talking about a lot of these big events, and the live events coming up, and also at the same time handling the longtail of VOD. It's two different challenges.
The video streaming market is booming, and as video streaming consumption continues to soar, content delivery network (CDN) technology needs to evolve rapidly to keep up. Damien Sterkers of Broadpeak discusses the current challenges with streaming and what measures to take to face them.
In an era when format and medium have been decoupled, and OTT has changed the notion of what is TV and what is film, 3Q's Andrew McCargar stresses in this clip from Streaming Forum Connect 2021 the importance of choosing format and media for a project, such as internal corporate training, based not on traditional categories, but by what you're trying to achieve, and adopt technologies that will serve that purpose best.
PUSH's Larry Gale, 3Q's Andrew McCargar, and Fairmile's Ian Nock discuss the emergence of pay-per-view and SVOD models for live music consumption during the pandemic, and how they will impact the future of live music.
We talk a lot about the technical side of latency, but what about the business side? As a content or service provider, what will it cost me if I don't invest in reducing latency? And does it vary by use case? Streaming Video Alliance's Jason Thibeault and NENT Sport Nordic's Martin Bergstrom discuss the impact of ascendant cloud workflows on streaming latency in this clip from Streaming Forum Connect 2021.
Fairmile's Ian Nock and PUSH's Larry Gale discuss how streaming has become essential in many areas that never recognized the need for it before the pandemic, the ways a vast range of people are engaging with it, and how the infrastructure and capabilities necessary to get streams online have grown with the demand, leaving only audio delivery lagging behind in this clip from Streaming Forum Connect 2021.
