Dailymotion Opens Sales Program to All Professional Partners

After a successful trial at the end of 2012, video sharing site Dailymotion is opening its sales program to all professional partners or Motionmakers (the name for the site's registered creative partners). Under the OpenVOD program, partners are free to charge for their content however they wish, and can also charge for live video. They can set their own prices, set their own terms, and decide which content is available for purchase. Partners are free to charge for individual clips or create monthly subscriptions. The program lets viewers preview a clip before making a purchase. Viewers can pay with a credit card, PayPal, SMS, or by phone. Following the testing period, the payment process was redesigned for simplicity.

Dailymotion notes that its flexible sales terms have so far attracted a variety of content, including features, shorts, TV shows, documentaries, animated shows, kids' shows, sports, music, advice shows, and podcasts. Available in 34 countries, the OpenVOD program has seen participation from the British documentary studio Journeyman Pictures, TV channel Eurochannel, Spanish filmmaker Cintel, and KZplay, a Japanese anime studio.

A Dailymotion executive explains that OpenVOD is meant to level the playing field for online sales. Using an embedded player, partners can add video sales to any site. Seventy percent of the net proceeds go to the content creator.
