India has gained its first commercial 4K video service, which comes from satellite service Tata Sky. Using Ericsson technology, streams are compressed for 4K distribution using HEVC and 1080p50. Ericsson notes that using HEVC lets Tata Sky serve 4K in a cost-effective and bandwidth-efficient manner.

The 4K launch was timed for the start of the cricket World Cut, which started February 14th and concludes March 29th. Tata Sky debuted its 4K set-top box prior to the start of the event.

"Ericsson is delighted to partner with Tata Sky to roll out India's first commercial 4K video service," says Chris Houghton, head of the India region for Ericsson. "Superior technology, proven industry leadership, and service excellence from Ericsson enables Tata Sky to offer a differentiated and future-proofed digital experience to its subscribers."

Tata Sky is a co-venture of Tata Sons and 21st Century Fox. It was incorporated in 2001.

"Tata Sky is committed towards delivering a world class TV viewing experience to its customers," says Harit Nagpal, CEO for Tata Sky, "As the discerning customers of today look towards the future of TV, we are pleased to extend our partnership with Ericsson to deliver next generation 4K ultra high definition technology to our customers in India."
