Xstream Broadens Facebook VOD Offering
Scandinavian streaming service provider Xstream is broadening access to its Mediamaker Facebook VOD add-on. The application lets content owners rent or sell videos on Facebook, accepting credit cards for payment. Besides being the world's largest social network, with over 800,000 members, Facebook is now the second-largest video streamer online, according to comScore, following only YouTube.
The Xstream offering includes social networking features, letting users see what Facebook friends are watching or have liked. The app also lets them carry on a real-time chat while watching a video.
Playback is in high-definition, directly within a Facebook page. Viewers can also choose a full-screen view.
Content owners can select the DRM (digital rights management) system they prefer to protect their videos, from Microsoft PlayReady, Widevide, Access, Irdeto, and others.
MediaMaker is a pre-designed video player created by Xstream. The Facebook VOD app includes a Payment and DRM module, as well as a Shop module. The Payment and DRM module lets content owners set length of access, create subscriptions, set prices, and get analytics on their sales. Content owners have the option to geoblock content from being sold in certain regions.
The Facebook VOD was announced on September 30, and was first used by Nordisk Film. Xstream is now offering it for all customers.
