Half of Video Viewing Will Be Mobile and On-Demand by 2020
Ericsson forecasts a large increase in mobile viewing, predicting that 50 percent of all video viewing will occur on a mobile device (such as notebooks, tablets, and phones) by 2020. Half of mobile viewing will be on phones, says Ericsson's TV & Media report for 2017.
That's not the only way TV viewing is changing: On-demand viewing will comprise nearly half of all video viewing by 2020. As on-demand's share of total viewing increases, the amount of time spent on live and linear programming decreases.
The trend in cord-cutting and -trimming certainly isn't over, Ericsson finds. In bad news for pay TV companies, it says 21 percent of pay TV customers plan to cut or trim their service in the next year, while 32 percent of consumers plan to increase spending on video-on-demand services.
There's a lot of video available to connected consumers, and that has some people alarmed. According to Ericsson, 1 in 8 consumers think that in the future they'll get lost in the great amount of video content available. At the moment, the report says, people spend 51 minutes per day searching for content they'd like to watch (an increase of 13 percent from 2016), which is why 70 percent say having a universal search for all TV and video content is useful.
To create its report, Ericsson conducted online surveys with 20,000 people from 13 countries. Participants were between the ages of 16 and 69, had home broadband connections, and streamed video at least weekly. View the full findings for free (no registration required).
