Interview with Tomas Sykora - CTO & Solution Architect of CDN77

Tom, tell us about your Live Streaming CDN.

Live Streaming CDN is an end-to-end platform suitable for both single events and linear IPTV broadcasting. It supports video processing as well as the CDN delivery for a smooth playback. Newly, we offer a customisable HTML5 player with a rich selection of analytics.

We’ve spent countless hours tweaking the streaming stack to make sure streams run smoothly on all combinations of operating systems, browsers and devices. We now offer 100% stable stream delivery over HTTP protocols, including HLS, HDS and MPEG-DASH.

What’s the tech stack and who is it best for?

The video processing is extremely demanding in terms of CPU and GPU power so the stack is made up of a fully redundant and powerful encoding/transcoding infrastructure. Once we transcode, repack and secure the streams, the CDN makes sure they take the fastest possible way to the viewer.

It’s the combination of the two - the streaming stack and the large capacity 7Tbps CDN - that makes the platform so powerful. Our network is made of 500 servers, equipped with 40Gbps or 100Gbps uplinks, newest SSD-only hardware and latest Debian. With enough bandwidth for delivery, our clients stream large quality videos be it 4K or HD while the adaptive streaming offers profiles for those with limited connections.

The customer base derives from various sectors. We now serve mostly IPTV channels, sports, cultural and technological events. The special client group are Internet TVs where we provide support for live streaming and VOD.

That’s exciting. Any recent customer success that you’re proud of?

Quite recently, we’ve worked on a Live streaming and VOD solution for a large national public TV in Europe with 600Gpbs+ daily traffic peaks. This implementation involved the signal ingestion over SDI as well as the entire procedure of editing and processing both the linear and non-linear content.

We did set up HW encoders at the client’s site in order to acquire the content and transfer it over IP to our data centres for further processing. The playback protocols ranged from HLS and MPEG-DASH for desktop and mobile to MPEG-TS for HbbTV.

On the SW side, we provided the client with a made-to-measure player along with a powerful dashboard with VOD management features and advanced analytics.

Personally, it’s been a fascinating journey, as I have gained new insight into TV broadcasting. All the way down from its creation, to the playback.
