Vodafone chooses Nordija as middleware partner in the Netherlands

Nordija's middleware is being used to deliver the IPTV portion of new triple play proposition, driving Vodafone's set-top boxes, multiscreen devices and webTV.

Kgs. Lyngby, Denmark(25 Mar 2014)

Vodafone has created a new solution for its fixed broadband triple play proposition in the Dutch market. End users have access to a 3rd party Vodafone app, which allows them to watch (live) TV on smartphones and tablets, or engage these as a ‘second screen’ whilst watching TV. Nordija’s second screen interaction technology will enable Vodafone customers to control the interactive set-top box and manage recordings from anywhere. Integration between platforms is an important feature of this new solution.

From concept to market in less than six months

“Using Nordija’s middleware as a part of the IPTV eco-system allowed us to have the entire IPTV solution ready to market in less than six months,” explains Ruud van den Oosterkamp of GlasOperator, a Fibre-to-the-Home provider recently acquired by Vodafone. “Nordija supported us in the concept, development, implementation and knowledge transfer, making it possible to deliver the project in this very short time. We already had some experience with the Nordija platform through one of our other partners, and we were very positive. Besides this good impression, the flexibility of both the platform and the company were important factors in our decision.”

Changing landscape

“In the Netherlands the number of high speed broadband connections are still growing rapidly and stimulating more and more compelling TV offerings. This will be driving extensive changes to the TV landscape in the coming years. With this in mind, Vodafone is targeting cooperation with flexible, forward-looking partners such as Nordija who can accommodate these developments.”

The utilised ‘fokusOn’ technology from Nordija is based on a standard, scaleable internet architecture. It relies on proven, robust technologies, as used on major websites attracting millions of hits per hour. Furthermore, its open eco-system eliminates vendor lock-in. Flexible web architecture with Javascript widgets, HTML5 and CSS3 enables complete freedom to design accessible user experiences for any platform.

Nordija technology allows users to enjoy personalised television and on-demand content on any device, anytime anywhere. The ‘fokusOn’ solution is built on standard web technologies, making it open, flexible and extensible. fokusOn can be run and operated in clients’ Data Centres or as a Cloud service.
