Harmonic's Customized Cable Headend Solution Eases Digital Television Transition in India

the worldwide leader in video delivery infrastructure, is now offering a cable headend solution designed to help Indian cable operators cost-effectively meet the 2014 government-mandated transition to digital TV services.

SAN JOSE, Calif.(06 Nov 2012)

Harmonic (NASDAQ: HLIT), the worldwide leader in video delivery infrastructure, is now offering a cable headend solution designed to help Indian cable operators cost-effectively meet the 2014 government-mandated transition to digital TV services. Tailored to the specific requirements of the Indian cable television market, Harmonic's cable solution features industry-leading Electra(R), ProStream(R) with ACE(R), and Ion(TM) video processing solutions capable of delivering superior-quality digital video content and increased channel lineups while minimizing operational costs.

"Cable operators in India are challenged to respond to the mandatory digitalization legislation enacted by the government," said Gidi Raz, director of Indian sales, Harmonic. "Based on our extensive deployment experience in the Indian as well as global cable and broadcast markets, we have developed a highly scalable cable headend solution that meets the specific channel requirements and capabilities of Indian cable operators by ensuring optimal video quality for digital television services while keeping overall headend costs down."

Harmonic's cable headend solution supports Indian operators' common channel lineup by providing the appropriate level of encoding for each channel. For SD content and proprietary set-top box channels, the headend solution leverages the industry-proven and globally deployed ProStream with ACE real-time processor and transcoder and the Ion multichannel MPEG-2 encoder, which deliver the best video quality at the lowest possible bitrates. Relying on the advanced feature set of Harmonic's market-leading Electra 8200 encoders, including sophisticated capabilities such as HD and 3D encoding as well as dual parallel output, Indian cable operators can seamlessly support HD channels and hybrid operations.

The high-density and scalable cable headend solution facilitates the launch of new value-added video services through a flexible architecture that is easily expandable and upgradeable, enabling Indian cable operators to cost-effectively support additional formats and multiscreen services in the future as technology evolves and business requirements change. Harmonic's cable solution has already been successfully deployed by a wide range of operators migrating from analog to digital TV, including -- most recently -- a leading cable operator in North India.

An expert on intelligent function integration, Harmonic Inc. is changing the economics, technology, and architecture of cable infrastructures around the world. Further information about Harmonic and the company's products is available at www.harmonicinc.com.
