Eurofins Digital Testing to Demonstrate World’s First HbbTV App Automation Solution at IBC 2015

Bristol, UK(09 Sep 2015)

Eurofins Digital Testing will demonstrate their HbbTV app automation solution for the first time at IBC 2015. This innovative solution can automate any HbbTV application completely unmodified, with no additional hardware, using industry-standard Selenium test scripts.

The HbbTV ecosystem is evolving fast, with most European iDTVs supporting HbbTV as standard and global deployments driving a large number of new HbbTV apps to be developed. Unlike other consumer platforms such as PC, Android and iOS, HbbTV devices have limited browser implementations that don’t support standard HTML app testing tools. With no viable HbbTV emulation available, HbbTV app testers and developers resort to time-consuming and unreliable manual testing on multiple TV devices. Eurofins Digital Testing’s HbbTV app automation solution solves these problems and enables test driven app development as well as cross platform and regression testing.

As HbbTV is an open standard typically deployed in retail, horizontal market HbbTV apps need to run on a large number of disparate platforms, meaning that HbbTV app developers and operators need to test on an ever-increasing number of devices. Traditional manual testing is no longer a robust, economic or scalable solution. Developers and testers can write Selenium scripts to control the HbbTV app through remote control events and verify correct app output data. Compared to test automation which relies on IR blasters and video capture, this approach avoids erroneous test failures and uses scripts that are easier to maintain as the app evolves.

Andy Hickman, CEO, UK and Hong Kong said:

“For the first time, HbbTV apps can be automated without expensive specialist automation hardware” he added that “the Eurofins HbbTV automated app solution helps solve interoperability issues and saves app developers both time and cost.”

The HbbTV app automation solution will be demonstrated at IBC 2015 in Amsterdam, 11-15th September, on stand 5:B17. To arrange a demonstration, contact Eurofins Digital Testing at digitaltesting@eurofins.com.
