Class Act: What's Your Digital Media Strategy?
These days, most learning institutions take the necessity of investing in their websites seriously. But when it comes to digital media, I feel like it’s 1998 all over again.

Digital media strategy has to happen at an institutional level because it involves major resources like infrastructure, equipment, and personnel. Fundamentally, if your school’s network isn’t ready to handle megabits of streaming video or gigabytes of downloaded files, you’ll be in for trouble if you try and put your media servers on it. Furthermore, coordinating digital media institutionwide can be a real money- and time-saver—you can avoid redundancies and catalyze cooperation between departments that can contribute complementary resources and specialties.

And it’s in central administration where the big money gets allocated. Every step down the administrative ladder, the pieces of the pie get skinnier. When digital media is prioritized at the top, the dollars tend to follow. And that’s what producers and users really need to make digital media effective on any campus.
