Netflix Announces Six-Country European Rollout

In what Netflix calls its biggest expansion ever, the subscription video-on-demand service has announce that it will begin operations in Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, and Switzerland later in 2014. The company didn't offer a firm date for the rollout and only said that pricing details would come "at a later date."

Netflix already has a strong footprint in Europe, as it's available in Denmark, Finland, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. Service to the Nordic countries began in October, 2012, while service to the Netherlands started in September, 2013. The service counts 48 million subscribers in over 40 countries.

When Netflix debuts in the six additional European countries later this year, subscribers will be able to watch Hollywood, global, and local TV shows and movies, as well as Netflix original productions. Subscribers will be able to view content on connected televisions, tablets, smartphones, and computers. People interested in subscribing when the service is available in their country can go to Netflix.com and sign up to get a notification email when the service has launched.

For the fiscal year 2013, Netflix had revenue of US $4.37 billion, operating income of $228 million, and net income of $112 million. At the time, Netflix counted 2,022 full-time employees.
