'YouTube for the Enterprise' Drives ROI, But Don't Call it That
As large organizations integrate video deeper into their core services, the 'YouTube in a box' designation doesn't fit anymore.

Corporate YouTubes or YouTubes for the Enterprise have been taking off in large companies around the world, but insiders don't call them that, anymore. At the recent Streaming Forum conference in London, Russell Zack, general manager EMEA for Kaltura, explained why.

"I think that 'YouTube for the Enterprise' is a good and descriptive name, but it really is dependent on who you're talking to within an organization at an enterprise," Zack explained. "For example, it could seem overly basic to a very sophisticated IT organization, but it could end up with a 'I got it' moment with a marketing organization. But, in the end, I think that in many cases many organizations have evolved beyond YouTube."

What does evolving beyond YouTube mean? It means that internal video is taking a more involved place within the enterprise, and so the YouTube designation, while it makes the product understandable, doesn't fully communicate the range of services available.

"They really look to leverage a video portal within their organization and integrate it with other applications making it as easy to use in many ways, shapes, or forms, like the consumer grade applications that they see, but also having the hardened security, integration with their social business applications like SharePoint, IBM Connections," Zack said. "So I think that's were you've started to see more and more the movement away from the association with a consumer brand."
