The 2012 Streaming Media Europe 101

Article Featured Image

When we launched the European version of Streaming Media magazine in 2008, our thinking was simple: online video -- like international commerce -- knows no borders, but each regional market across the globe presents its own set of challenges and opportunities. So it makes sense to have a publication that shares some content with its U.S.-based big brother, but it also presents a clear focus on the industry as it's developing specifically within Europe. (Clearly, there's an equally strong need for Asian, South American, and African versions of the magazine, though we're not in a position to tackle those markets at the present time.)

Our belief is borne out each year in our Readers' Choice Awards, which we present in both the U.S. and Europe: while a handful of the winners in the European awards are companies based in the States, the majority are based in Europe. U.S. companies -- sometimes referred to as "global," much to the understandable irritation of much of the globe -- might have the muscle and reach to enter international markets successfully, but regional companies are in a much better position to truly understand the markets in which they're based.

And so this year, we decided to select a "Streaming Media Europe 101" alongside our popular "Streaming Media 100"; the U.S.-focused list that is designed to present an annual picture of the most important companies in online video. The European list not only ups the ante by one (hey, we had to differentiate it somehow) but also strives to present a list of companies from Europe looking outward, rather than from a "global" perspective looking in.

We began by presenting a list of more than 220 companies to our editorial and publishing staff, asking them to rank each one on a scale of 1 (has no business being on such a prestigious list) to 5 (absolutely must be on the list). The final list -- the 101 companies that ranked highest -- comprises 63 companies that are either based in Europe or have their roots there. The remaining companies are mostly U.S.-based, but they have a strong market presence in Europe.

The Streaming Media Europe 101 will be an annual feature in this magazine, and I look forward to watching the composition of the list change as European companies continue to become bigger stars on the global stage.
