V-Nova Joins SMPTE® to Encourage Deployment of Next-Generation Video Encoding

V-Nova will participate with the SMPTE UK Section membership to assist the industry in devising practical and valuable steps to utilise standards effectively, regardless of the infrastructure in place.

Greater London(19 Dec 2016)

V-Nova Ltd., a leading provider of video compression solutions, today announced that it has joined the Society of Motion Pictures & Television Engineers® (SMPTE®), the organization whose standards work has supported a century of technological advances in entertainment technology, to join fellow industry leaders in devising standards for forward-thinking software solutions enabling high-quality video experiences.

V-Nova will participate with the SMPTE UK Section membership to assist the industry in devising practical and valuable steps to utilise standards effectively, regardless of the infrastructure in place.

“We welcome V-Nova’s commitment to supporting education of SMPTE members and the UK media community with respect to the new technologies of Ultra HD, with High-Dynamic-Range, wide colour gamut, and higher frame rates,” said Peter Weitzel, secretary/treasurer of the SMPTE UK Section.

For the past 100 years, the people of SMPTE have sorted out the details of many significant advances in entertainment technology, from the introduction of “talkies” and color television to HD and UHD (4K, 8K). Since its founding in 1916, the Society has earned an Oscar® and multiple Emmy® Awards for its work in advancing moving-imagery education and engineering across the communications, technology, media and entertainment industries. The Society has developed thousands of standards, recommended practices and engineering guidelines, more than 800 of which are currently in force.

“We believe in the idea of ‘Open Innovation’, a notion that innovation should not stay siloed within a company,” said Guido Meardi, CEO and co-founder of V-Nova Ltd. “Instead, we are looking forward to sharing our expertise with fellow members of SMPTE to help deliver advanced video compression technology and software solutions to the TV and video industry. By addressing the dramatic growth in global network traffic, we can look forward to extending the potential of video services, from mobile streaming in emerging markets to contribution over satellite or even virtual reality and 360-video.”

V-Nova PERSEUS™ is a video processing technology that responds to today’s video delivery challenges, closing the capacity gap for quality delivery to connected devices over existing networks. V-Nova PERSEUS redraws the traditional bitrate-quality curve, enabling operators and service providers to provide high-quality video (i.e., both linear and nonlinear) within their bandwidth constraints: UHD at HD bitrates on large-screen TVs, HD at SD bitrates on legacy set-top boxes and mobile devices, and SD at sub-audio bitrates over bandwidth-constrained mobile networks.
