Enhanced API Lets Clients Bundle Encoding.com Service

Thanks to just-announced improvements to Encoding.com's application programming interface (API), clients can now bundle the online encoding company's services into their own offerings. Vzaar, Kaltura, Cisco Eos, and Giant Realm are early adopters of the new service.

While Encoding.com's API has been available to clients for a year-and-a-half, the enhancements allow clients to fully integrate the company's tools into their own offerings and deliver Encoding.com's transcoding services to their own customers. These "sub-users" can create an Encoding.com account and participate in the company's 30-day trial, all within the host company's interface.

Clients can then track the encoding and transcoding usage of their individual sub-users in real time, and bill then accordingly. Encoding.com's clients have different billing methods, says Encoding.com's president Jeff Malkin, so the API is flexible.

What this means for Encoding.com clients is that they can offer encoding and transcoding services without building their own tools, and they can be sure they're offering access to the latest video formats. They can also benefit from Encoding.com's volume discount. While they're free to bill their sub-users any way they want, Malkin says, they receive a discount for sending more data to Encoding.com.

Bundling Encoding.com into other service offerings is the company's fastest area of growth, says Malkin, so enhancing the API to let clients do more was an easy choice.

"For us, it's a no-brainer," Malkin says. It allows the company to gain many new customers with limited sales resource.

Encoding.com is targeting user-generated content video platforms, online video platforms, content management systems, online education companies, and social networking sites. Over the next six months, more companies will announce their partnering with Encoding.com, Malkin says.

"We're delighted to have Encoding.com's as part of our Application Exchange, the market place that makes it easy for publishers to get new video apps and services. With a simple API integration, Encoding.com's Kaltura App allows our publishers to enjoy continuously updated transcoding services with a breadth of supported formats and reliable service," says Shay David, vice president of business and community development at Kaltura.
