High culture in high-resolution: In what it's calling the first live event streamed in 4K HEVC using MPEG-DASH on the public intranet, Elemental announced that it is partnering with the Vienna State Opera to broadcast a production of Verdi's Nabucco on Wednesday, May 7, at 7PM CET. The production will star Placido Domingo in the title role.

The stream will be accessible to a global audience of UHD TV owners, and will be shown on a 65-inch Samsung UHD TV at the Vienna opera house, itself. To play the stream, viewers will need to install the Wiener Staatsoper Samsung TV app, which will have been released prior to the performance. Elemental notes this is the first connected TV app with integrated UHD playout. A time-shift feature will let viewers see the opera during their prime time hours, no matter what time zone they're in.

Viewers can use the Wiener Staatsoper service to purchase HD recordings of HD productions, then watch them on any connected device. Language is no barrier thanks to a companion Vienna State Opera app from Ooyala that displays subtitles and score sheets on a second screen.

For the Verdi production, Elemental will live encode a stream captured by a Sony PMW-F55 CineAlta 4K camera. Ooyala will stream the 4K HEVC MPEG-DASH stream to Samsung TV and desktop apps.
