  • Understanding ultra high definition television – technologies for enhanced viewing experiences
Over the last 10 years, high definition television (HDTV) has been replacing standard definition television as the expected viewing format for television programming. While HDTV provides an enhanced user experience, ultra high definition television (UHDTV) matches the full capabilities of the human visual system (HVS) and therefore promises even greater consumer appeal. However, increased resolution is not the only way in which service providers can improve television viewing experiences for their users. Future UHDTV can also offer high dynamic range, wide color gamut and high frame rate. This white paper explains what these enhancements mean to the HVS and hence for consumer appeal. It also outlines the cost, benefits and end-to-end delivery implications of each of the highlighted technologies.
