Wowza to Showcase Video Streaming for Android and Blackberry Phones, and the just released Apple iPad at NAB Show

Wowza’s Unified Media Server Expands the Universe of Mobile, Desktop and IPTV Video Destinations for Content Creators, Distributors and Broadcasters

Evergreen, CO(05 Apr 2010)

Wowza Media Systems, the media server company has announced that its unified media server, Wowza Media Server 2 now supports  streaming to the world's leading video-friendly mobile devices including Android based smart phones,  select Blackberry phone models, and the just released Apple® iPad®. This expands the Wowza Media Server 2 already market leading set of supported players and devices, which include the iPhone®, Flash®, Silverlight®, and QuickTime players, as well as IPTV set-top boxes.

This bodes well for video creators, distributors and broadcasters keen on tapping the mobile phone market which IT research firm Gartner predicts will outpace computers as the most common Web access device worldwide by 2013. And, recent forecasting conducted by Coda Research Consultancy estimates that by 2015 mobile video will account for 68.5 percent of all mobile U.S. data usage. Coda estimates that 95 million of the total 158 million mobile Internet users in the U.S. will be watching video on their phones by 2015.

"Enabling delivery of quality video content with minimal effort and cost to as many screens as possible is what Wowza is all about," said Dave Stubenvoll, CEO and co-founder of Wowza. "This has been our ultimate objective from the very beginning. We built Wowza Media Server 2 to help our customers evolve with the ever changing landscape of clients and devices that consumers use to access and view video content."

Wowza customers are deploying Wowza servers to power multi-client services that support streaming to desktop players and the latest generation of video-friendly mobile devices. Livestation, a live online TV news service, is first to offer Wowza-powered mobile streaming for Android and Blackberry users at http://mobile.livestation.com portal, in addition to its Flash and iPhone services.

Commenting on the competitive advantage his company has realized from the flexibility of Wowza's technology, Livestation CEO, Matteo Berlucchi said, "Wowza's focus on unified multi-client delivery empowered us to expand our services rapidly to new devices in a very cost-effective fashion.  This agility has greatly benefited our partner channels by making their content accessible to the much wider audiences."

RTÉ, the Irish state broadcaster has deployed Wowza Media Servers to stream live Flash and iPhone video for its 24-hour RTÉ NewsNow service, as well as radio programming to its Radio1 and 2FM iPhone apps.

"I'm impressed with the range of outputs that Wowza can perform and I am already planning future projects based on Wowza technology," said Warren Gatchell, a systems administrator for publishing technology at RTÉ.  "I have also found the level of support offered by Wowza to be second to none as queries I've raised have always been answered within hours."

Wowza Media Server 2 is the only software on the market to natively implement concurrent streaming support for Adobe RTMP protocol suite, Apple HTTP Streaming, Microsoft Smooth Streaming, RTSP/RTP delivery for Apple QuickTime, mobile and other clients as well as MPEG-TS for OTT IPTV set-top delivery.
