Nordija enables the Waoo! & Netflix partnership

Leading Danish broadband and TV provider Waoo! deploys one of the world’s first IPTV service with integrated Netflix - thanks to technology from Nordija and Airties.

Kgs. Lyngby, Denmark(25 Mar 2014)

Customers can now easily switch between TV channels and Netflix using a single remote control. Netflix works across all platforms, so it is possible to start a movie on the TV in the living room and finish watching it on a smartphone, tablet or computer anywhere else in the house. As Netflix is integrated into the TV box which is managed by Nordija’s middleware, there’s no more cumbersome connecting of new devices. Nordija’s and Airties’ technical implementation allow Waoo! subscribers to watch Netflix directly on the set-top box. Waoo! has been working with Nordija as middleware partner since 2010.

Global first

Waoo! is the first service provider in Denmark and one of the first operator worldwide to partner with the leading Internet television network Netflix. Today, Waoo!’s customer base totals some 300.000 and annual turnover is $90 million. About one third of all households in Denmark have access to the company’s fibre network.

California’s Netflix previously signed up cable-TV operator Virgin Media and Sweden’s Com Hem to offer its content through their pay-television services. The company’s CFO David Wells has stated Netflix also wishes to sign up U.S. cable operators.

User-friendly TV Portal

“The launch of our leading partnership with Netflix also included cooperation with our middleware developer Nordija,” says Jørgen Stensgaard, CEO at Waoo! “Nordija provides us with an extremely user-friendly TV Portal. In this instance, the efficient team from Nordija implemented access to the Netflix service into this interface. Our partnership with Netflix has generated publicity as well as increased demand, and Nordija’s contribution has been an important part of our success. Our Danish customers can now enjoy some of the world’s most popular content, in the world’s best quality. Partnerships with other streaming services is now definitely a strategic option for Waoo!”

The utilised ‘fokusOn’ technology from Nordija is based on a standard, scaleable internet architecture. It relies on proven, robust technologies, as used on major websites attracting millions of hits per hour. Furthermore, its open eco-system eliminates vendor lock-in. Flexible web architecture with Javascript widgets, HTML5 and CSS3 enables complete freedom to design accessible user experiences for any platform.

Nordija technology allows users to enjoy personalised television and on-demand content on any device, anytime anywhere. The ‘fokusOn’ solution is built on standard web technologies, making it open, flexible and extensible. fokusOn can be run and operated in clients’ Data Centres or as a Cloud service.
