Elemental Accelerates Video Processing for Telefónica Global Video Platform

Enables Delivery of Pay TV and OTT Services to Multiple Devices for Pay TV Giant

Amsterdam—IBC 2013(13 Sep 2013)

Elemental Technologies, the leading supplier of video solutions for multiscreen content delivery, today announced that Elemental® Server and Elemental® Conductor are providing file transcoding and system management for the Telefónica Global Video Platform (GVP) video-on-demand (VOD) network. Elemental systems accelerate file conversion for Telefónica video entertainment services, including authenticated over-the-top (OTT) content to Android, Apple or Windows mobile devices and connected TVs from Samsung and LG, and simultaneously to Microsoft Media Room set-top boxes.

One of the world’s leading integrated telecommunications operators, Telefónica provides communication, information and entertainment solutions in 24 European and Latin American countries, serving more than 315 million customers. Telefónica developed the GVP to help its operating businesses deliver high-performance, differentiated and feature-rich TV content and services to consumers over both managed high-speed broadband networks and OTT broadband networks. The GVP provides a range of advanced features to TV subscribers, including time-shifting capabilities and multiscreen services, enabling Telefónica to grow its business and reach new audiences. Telefónica has deployed the GVP in Brazil, Chile, Spain and Argentina and anticipates extending the deployment of TV services based on the GVP to a number of its other operating businesses over the next months and years.

“The Telefónica GVP gives our operating businesses the ease and convenience of a global, convergent platform while maintaining flexibility over content for local businesses,” said David del Val, Head of Product and Services at Telefonica Digital. “Elemental systems consistently deliver faster than real-time transcoding and authenticated content delivery for Telefónica profiles, which is vital to supporting the rapid changes we are addressing in the fast-growing global video market.”

Telefónica operating businesses submit video transcoding jobs through the Telefónica ingestion automated system via the flexible Elemental REST API. With direct access to the Telefónica network attached storage (NAS) system, Elemental systems are used to accelerate file conversion and to assure consistent application of appropriate profiles to all Telefónica content, assuring common quality and device compatibility prior to distribution.

Elemental systems transcode up to 70 hours daily of high-definition (HD) and standard-definition (SD) video-on-demand content, delivering 12 MP4 adaptive outputs for portable devices and 11 Microsoft Smooth outputs for set-top boxes prior to GVP system protection, ingestion, and publication to the Telefónica CDN. Elemental systems are also used in pre-production, post and software release test environments.

“Telefónica is one of the world’s fastest growing and most dynamic integrated telecommunications operators in the world,” said John Nemeth, VP sales EMEA for Elemental. “We are thrilled to support their efforts with the unmatched speed, quality, and flexibility of our video processing solutions.”

Elemental is demonstrating its full suite of advanced video processing solutions at the IBC2013 Conference and exhibition September 13-17 in Hall 4, Stand 4.B75 of the Amsterdam RAI.
