Bitmovin Modular Player Cuts the Wait for Video Playback

San Francisco, CA(04 Apr 2018)

Bitmovin, a world leader in online video technology, announces Player v8, a totally modular player, allowing service providers to select the exact functionality they need for their networks and content. A customised player can be up to 75 per cent smaller than a fully loaded player with all possible modules, reducing the typical time load time on a HTML page by up to one full second. The modular player will be demonstrated for the first time on the Bitmovin booth (SU9901CM) at the NAB Show 2018 (April 10-14, Las Vegas Convention Centre).

Bitmovin’s modular player was developed to get consumers to the content they want as fast as possible, especially in low bandwidth networks. Developers can select from a range of modules including Ad insertion, digital rights management (DRM), Chromecast and Flash support. Using the perfect size player can improve the overall user experience and therefore reduce churn. For ad-supported services, this can maximize views and boost revenue.

Based on HTML5, Bitmovin’s modular player can run on any platform, from smart TVs to set-top boxes, games consoles, smartphones and desktop. The player supports any video content, including High Dynamic Range (HDR) and 8K, ensuring it will continue to provide best in class experiences in future.

“Consumers have a need for speed, they expect to get to the content  they want in a heartbeat,” said Stefan Lederer, CEO and co-founder at Bitmovin. “Taking a fully modular approach means that developers can create a player that matches their exact needs in the smallest possible file size.”

Bitmovin has been a first mover in almost every significant development in online video, from building and deploying the world’s first commercial adaptive streaming (MPEG-DASH/HLS) HTML5 Player, to being the first to achieve 100x real-time encoding speeds in the cloud.

Bitmovin customers include fuboTV, New York Times, Periscope, RTL, Sling TV and Bouygues Telecom; collectively delivering several billion videos to consumers every day.
