The 2014 Streaming Media Europe 101
Two years ago, we published the first Streaming Media Europe 101 list, the Eurocentric variation of the Streaming Media 100 list we began doing for our U.S. magazine in 2011. When we launched this version, we couldn’t help but wonder what would happen in subsequent years, as online video vendors consolidated and receded—would the list become more “Americanised” with each year, as more and more U.S. companies moved into the European market?
The answer, so far at least, has turned out to be a resounding, “No.” There are 32 U.S.-based companies on this year’s list—about the same as in previous years—but they’re all truly global in nature. And while we want the 101 to highlight Europe, we can’t deny the international reach of the U.S. companies that are on the list.
Still, as a publication that focuses on Europe, we’re also thrilled to report that those U.S. companies aren’t “encroaching” on European vendors more with each passing year. If anything, European companies are stronger than ever, and many of them are, in fact, beating the global giants in regional markets because of their local expertise.
Perhaps the most impressive thing about this year’s list is that it features 26 new entrants, either new companies or companies claiming their place on the Streaming Media Europe 101 for the very first time. Of course, that means an equal number have dropped off the list—to be fair, some content-focused companies are gone, as this year we decided to focus only on vendors who provide technologies or services that enable others to deliver their own content—so it will be interesting to see if next year’s list shows as much turnover or if it stabilises.
The list was chosen using the same process we’ve used in the past. We begin with a master list of the more than 250 companies we’re tracking in the European streaming media space, then ask our staff and regular contributors to rank every one of them on a scale of 1 (has no business on a list of the most prestigious companies in the space) to 5 (no list of the most prestigious companies in streaming would be complete without them). Nobody averaged a perfect 5, though every company on the list averaged at least a 3 or higher.
