TalkTalk Announces 160K New Subscribers for YouView
Proving that family and children's content is just as popular as sport, YouView finds its niche.

Telecommunications company TalkTalk, one of seven broadcast and hardware partners in creating YouView, announced that it has signed up 160,000 new subscribers in the second quarter of 2013. That puts YouView at 390,000 subscribers overall.

Along with the subscriber numbers, TalkTalk shared information on where those viewers are coming from and what they're watching. Three-quarters of new subscribers upgraded from TalkTalk's Freeview and Freesat services, the company said. It sees these customers as pay TV holdouts who previously avoided services with expensive or long-term contracts. It claims that new subscribers are happy with the service, giving high marks to everything from installation to content selection.

Streaming services including the BBC iPlayer and Spotify account for 35 percent of all traffic on the TalkTalk network. Sunday is the busiest day for those services, with around 640 to 650GB of traffic streamed. That's the equivalent of 237,714 HD programs on the iPlayer, TalkTalk notes.

TalkTalk added that its top five film rentals for 2013 so far are Life of Pi, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Wreck-It Ralph, The Impossible, and Django Unchained. The most popular on-demand programs are "Peppa Pig" and "Ben & Holly."

TalkTalk launched the YouView TV service in September, 2012. Customers get a set-top box that can pause, rewind, and record up to 4,000 shows.
