Sainsbury's Will Use Rovi Entertainment Store for VOD Service
The retailer's previously announced video-on-demand store will launch later this year with Rovi's white label offering.

Supermarket chain Sainsbury's has licensed Rovi Corporation's Rovi Entertainment Store to power its upcoming video-on-demand service, which will launch sometime this year. At launch, the service will be available through the Sainsbury's Entertainment web site. It will later expand and be available on connected devices such as smart TVs, internet-enabled Blu-ray Disc players, smartphones, and game consoles.

Sainsbury's announced in August that it would launch a video-on-demand service with Rovi.

While having another streaming entertainment option is good for consumers, we'll apparently have to wait until closer to launch to learn how many titles Sainsbury's service will carry, how strong it will be for new releases, and if it will be competitive on price.

The Rovi Entertainment Store lets retailers launch over-the-top online stores that deliver video to a range of devices. Rovi's offering includes white label storefronts, cloud services, and services to help with content licensing, management, and marketing. Retailers can use the whole system or choose components to work with their existing services.
