Gracenote, which specializes in metadata and software for digital media, is launching its eyeQ interactive program guide (IPG) at the IFA show in Berlin. eyeQ offers comprehensive listing information for the European market, bundled with other smart TV features.

The idea behind eyeQ is to turn connected TVs into media hubs. Viewers can use eyeQ to find broadcast, on-demand, and streamed content. The service also offers deep metadata: clicking on a program calls up a plot summary, cast and crew info, high-resolution images, and links to related shows. Viewers can see recommendations for similar programs.

eyeQ works with Gracenote's suite of connected TV services, including MusicID, VideoID, and Video Explore.

Philips has already signed on to the eyeQ service, and will use it in its 2011 line of connected TVs. The Philips sets will offer a home screen, where viewers can search both broadcast and online content. The program guide will also be available to current Philips connected TV owners as a software update.

"TV viewership is on the rise and is being radically transformed from a passive experience to a more engaged, interactive, and on-demand experience," says Stephen White, president of Gracenote. "Gracenote eyeQ lets manufacturers provide a deeper and more personal way to watch TV, while also getting the ability to steer people to purchase, stream, and download content."
