Ericsson Releases Research Report on TV Viewing in 2020
Six years from now, viewers will expect more personalized recommendations and a viewing experience that's more interactive and social.

Taking a thought leadership position on the future on TV viewing, Ericsson has released "Forever Evolving Experience," a research paper that maps out what the viewing experience will look like in six years. This paper is the first of a six-part series called Ericsson Game Changers that will examine the TV and media world of 2020.

"Forever Evolving Experience" describes how viewers in 2020 will expect TV, movie, and gaming to be integrated, accessible, and personalized to their tastes. High definition content, multiple screen viewing, and viewer interactivity will all be standard, and video and social media will be seamlessly connected. Device makers, social networking platforms, and apps will all play a part in shaping this world, not just the major media providers.

Key findings in the report say that viewers will split their time in half between live linear programming and on-demand content, softening peak viewing times. Viewers will receive targeted suggestions across live, linear, and on-demand platforms. Social media recommendations will drive viewing habits.

The viewer experience will be more immersive in 2020, with viewer interaction a constant that includes social networking, betting, and gaming.

“Content owners and broadcasters must change programming formats, distribution rights, and advertising models. TV service providers must become ultimate aggregators and enable their viewers to pick and mix content, discover content in a targeted way, and find everything on anything," says Per Borgklint, senior vice president and head of business unit support solutions for Ericsson.
