Watch a free movie on the go. That's the suggestion of Popcornflix, an online movie streamer that today is announcing Apple iOS apps for viewers in the U.K. and Ireland. Popcornflix has a small library -- currently about 200 titles -- which are available for free, although with ads. The company hopes to grow its library to 700 titles by the end of this year.

Popcornflix boasts that it has titles in a wide range of genres, including action, comedy, family, drama, horror, Bollywood, and documentary. While viewers will find A-list stars, they won't find many movies they've heard of before. It's more a free diversion for the frugal than a rival to LoveFilm or Netflix.

As for those ads, Popcornflix titles include pre-roll, spot, and banner ads. The service is now available in ten countries, including the U.K., Ireland, the U.S., and Canada. Company execs plan to take the service to even more countries in the coming months with smart TV and set-top box distribution, although they haven't announced which countries.

"We developed these apps to be state-of-the-art, easy, and fun to use. Viewers are never more than two taps away from hundreds of great films they can view for free," says Gary Delfiner, senior vice president of digital distribution for Screen Media Ventures, LLC, the parent company of Popcornflix.
